The 2014 growing season will be remembered as one of great quality and depth, despite the continuation of a withering drought and the South Napa earthquake, which effected some of the other wines being made at the location where we make Vitesse but fortunately we escaped unscathed. Despite the lack of water, with only half of the usual rainfall for the year, the weather was nonetheless perfect for growing abundant Cabernet grapes with striking depth of flavors.
Harvest again started and ended earlier than usual. The first grapes for sparkling wine picked on July 30 and nearly all harvest activity was completed by the third week in October – for many, a full two weeks ahead of the normal harvest schedule. The effort shows in the deep color, structure and concentration that is Vitesse.
Winemaker Miquel Caratachea once again crafted a beautiful wine from almost 100 lots primarily sourced from hillside Napa Valley and other premium sites. The wines received great care with frequent barrel topping and "délestage," which gently extracts the phenolic compounds by oxygenating the juice to produce a softer, less astringent wine exhibiting more fruit character.
The final wine displays a classic hillside Napa Valley Cabernet style, with deep concentration, exceptional complexity, velvety texture and a long, mouth-watering finish. It's bright garnet hue and enticing aromas of frambois, vanilla and cinnamon announce a palate that is rich and textured. Flavors of current, sweet cassis, huckleberry and pencil shavings are followed by supple tannins that linger through the long finish.
